The first motives date back to the Baroque Period, showing ladies and cavaliers dressed in lavishly decorated costumes. Those gingerbreads were popular with countryfolk. It is quite possible that the countryfolk could identify themselves with the wealthy and privileged through the picture. The motives reminded children of fairy-tale heroes.
